Theresa Builds a New Beginning
When determination meets opportunity
At the end of 2023, Theresa was ready for a change.
After nearly five years working at Amazon in New Jersey, she found herself struggling both personally and professionally. “I was going through a lot,” she shares. “I was very depressed and trying to figure out what I really wanted to do.”
Following a difficult season in her life, her probation officer encouraged her to check out CityLink, a decision that became a turning point. Through CityLink, Theresa earned educational certificates, obtained her driver’s license, and enrolled in construction training. Along the way, she discovered something she truly loves: building.
“I love helping the community and building for people,” she says. “I want to learn more, especially electrical.”
Her momentum continued. She joined AmeriCorps, completed the CEO program, and in January started a job with Habitat for Humanity, a role she absolutely loves.
Before connecting with ChangingGears, transportation was a constant challenge. She shared a car with her former partner or relied on the bus, family, friends, or Uber. Through a CityLink class and tour, she learned about ChangingGears and the opportunity to purchase a reliable vehicle.
“Having a car makes me feel more independent,” Theresa says. “I can just get up and go wherever I need to go. It makes me feel reliable.”
She also worked with Michelle at Smart Money to build a budget and strengthen her financial foundation. Today, Theresa is thriving, working full-time with Habitat, celebrating milestones with friends, and focusing on positive, community-centered goals.
“I feel so blessed,” she says. “I just want to give back.”
Her advice to others considering the program? “Take the time to put your time in. You can really grow. It’s one place to go and get the help you need.”
Theresa went through difficult circumstances to get to this point. But with determination, support, and the keys to her own car, she’s building more than homes, she’s building a future filled with purpose.
And thanks to supporters like you, more neighbors are gaining the reliable transportation they need to move toward self-sufficiency, one car at a time.
