From Lawn Care to Car Care: Kam Finds His Path
Driven & Resourceful
When Kam first heard about CityLink, it was through a friend who had joined the Medical Assistant Program. He was curious but kept missing the chance to catch a program that fit his interests—until the Tech Training Program caught his eye. After taking a tour, Kam decided to give it a try.
At the time, Kam’s life was full of ambition and hard work. He was working at a hospital, running his own lawn care business with about 30 properties, building a YouTube channel about finances and passive income, and even experimenting with a candle-making company he hopes to relaunch one day. But despite all this, he was looking for something more—a career path that matched his passions.
Cars had always been that passion. Kam had been working on his own vehicles and lawn care equipment for years, even helping family and friends keep their cars on the road. What started with replacing a car door at Pull-N-Pay grew into a hands-on hobby and a dream to build a career in the automotive industry. When he heard about ChangingGears’ Automotive Technician Training, Kam saw a way to connect his skills to a long-term future.
“The most helpful part of the program was the people,” Kam said. He credits his instructor, Eric, for bringing deep knowledge and genuine care for every student. The other technicians in the shop also welcomed Kam and his classmates, creating an environment where learning felt supportive and encouraging. The flexible schedule allowed him to keep working while building new skills.
Kam entered the program with clear goals: to get his foot in the door at a dealership, work his way up, and eventually earn ASE certifications. Within the next two years, he plans to become an expert-level EV specialist. He’s well on his way—today, Kam works at Jake Sweeney Chevrolet, where he recently completed his training and is now handling vehicles on his own. His favorite part of the job? The variety. Each day brings new models, new challenges, and new problems to solve.
Even while building his career, Kam continues to care for his community. He still runs his lawn care business, helps his sister chase her own goals, and is the first to show up and cheer on family and friends. His advice for others considering ChangingGears? “Every job has its ups and downs. Make sure it’s something you really want to do. Focus on your goals. Don’t let that first step of getting into the program be your last—because you never know where it might take you.”
For Kam, that first step has already opened doors to a career he’s passionate about—and a future he’s determined to keep building.
