Bryier Took His Mom’s Encouragement to Heart
Curiosity Sparked Confidence and launched a Career
When Bryier first heard about CityLink, he wasn’t sure what to expect or even if the commute from Forest Park would be worth it. At the time, he was working as a home health aide, caring for elderly clients and supporting his mom with her nonprofit focused on CPR and first aid training. He had even earned his trainer's license. But something was missing.
“I wanted to be moving,” Bryier shared. “I like work that keeps me active, something more hands-on and demanding.”
Encouraged by his mom who is always on the lookout for new opportunities, Bryier decided to check out CityLink and the programs offered. From his first experience with CityLink at the Info Session, something clicked. “You can feel the good energy and genuine care,” he said. During the Info Session, he discovered ChangingGears’ Automotive Technician Training program and immediately wanted to apply for the program.
Around the same time, life gave him another unexpected nudge in this new direction. When his car broke down right in front of a repair shop, he struck up a conversation with a technician on staff. That conversation opened his eyes to the possibilities of a career in automotive work.
“I’ve always wanted to get into cars: fixing them, flipping them, maybe even owning my own dealership one day,” Bryier said. “This felt like the right step.”
At ChangingGears, Bryier found more than just technical training. He found a community with his fellow students and even the staff. From support from the pastor and financial advisors to guidance from the social coordinator, every part of the program helped him grow. One experience that stood out was preparing for interviews with Greg, who coached him on how to present himself confidently and ask thoughtful questions.
That preparation paid off. In one day, Bryier was offered two jobs, one with Toyota and one with Buick. He approached the decision with confidence, comparing offers and advocating for himself. Ultimately, he accepted a position with Buick that offered higher pay and a schedule that better fit his life.
“I even asked for a tour of the shop during the interview,” he said. “I felt confident going in and that made all the difference.”
Bryier’s long-term goals are just as ambitious as his work ethic. He hopes to continue learning under experienced technicians, build his skills, and eventually restore and resell cars. One day, he dreams of owning his own dealership, with a focus on financial stability and growth. He’s especially interested in the future of electric vehicles and looks forward to gaining experience in that area.
For others considering the program, his advice is simple: “Give it a shot. You don’t realize the impact it can have until you’re in it. Be disciplined, show up on time, and try everything. I had no experience coming in, but I stayed focused and I fell in love with it.”
Bryier also carries with him a piece of wisdom from his mom: “The early bird gets the worm.” It’s simple but it’s a mindset that continues to guide him as he steps into this new chapter.
Bryier started his new role at Buick yesterday! We couldn’t be more proud and we can’t wait to see where his journey takes him next.
